“This time, I found Vilnius utterly delightful… I renewed my acquaintance with several truly cultured people and spent the most pleasant time here,” wrote Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis in the autumn of 1907, shortly after joining the Board of the Lithuanian Art Society.

Between 1907 and 1909, Vilnius experienced a true cultural revival: the press emerged from the underground, societies were forming, and literary, artistic, and theatrical life flourished once more. It was in this city – increasingly multicultural and beginning to show the signs of modernism – that Čiurlionis became a truly versatile figure: a graphic artist, book designer, choirmaster, pianist, composer, and exhibition organiser.

In Vilnius, visitors saw his celebrated painting series – Sonatas, Preludes, and Fugues – for the first timeHere he painted, performed in concerts, discussed the idea of the Nation’s House, collaborated with various societies, and, together with Sofija Kymantaitė, shared the plans for his future opera, Jūratė.

Today, more than a century later, the museum invites you to a richly historic exhibition in the very heart of Vilnius, in the very streets Čiurlionis once walked.

Come and discover Čiurlionis in Vilnius – amidst music, painting, societies, and the unfolding visions of a modernising city.
