About the song Original title: "Tautiška giesmė"
Artist/Author: Trad.
Date: 1898

The Lithuanian national anthem cannot be omitted from this selection, and not only because it is the institutional symbol of Lithuanian identity. In the years when it was forbidden, the sole act of singing it was a manifestation of protest; as it was reintroduced as the official national anthem, it became a symbol of pride and hope that freedom was getting nearer and nearer. A performance (planned or spontaneous) of “Tautiška giesmė” was featured in each and every event of the Singing Revolution, with virtually no exception. Both music and lyrics were written by Vincas Kudirka, in a time when Lithuania was still part of the Russian Empire.

Lyrics
Lithuanian
English
Lietuva, Tėvyne mūsų,
Tu didvyrių žeme,
Iš praeities Tavo sūnūs
Te stiprybę semia.

Tegul Tavo vaikai eina
Vien takais dorybės,
Tegul dirba Tavo naudai
Ir žmonių gėrybei.

Tegul saulė Lietuvoj
Tamsumas prašalina,
Ir šviesa, ir tiesa
Mūs žingsnius telydi.

Tegul meilė Lietuvos
Dega mūsų širdyse,
Vardan tos, Lietuvos
Vienybė težydi!
Lithuania, our homeland
Land of heroes
May your sons draw their strength
From your past experiences

May your children always follow
Only the paths of virtue
May they work towards your good
And that of all people

May the sun in Lithuania
Disperse darkness
And light, and truth
May guide our steps.

May the love of Lithuania
Burn in our hearts
For the sake of Lithuania
Let the unity blossom
About the song Original title: "Marijos Giesmė"
Artist/Author: Trad.
Date: 1913

There should be at least one song of religious contents in this collection. Religious faith, denied by Soviet authorities, became soon an important symbol of identity for Lithuanians and a distinctive sign from the oppressor. Singing a religious song, or more generally celebrating any form of religious rite, were in themselves acts of protest. “Marijos giesmė”, more commonly known as “Marija Marija” was a particularly popular hymn, with music by Česlovas Sasnauskas and lyrics by the poet Maironis. In addition, lines such as “Išgelbėk nuo priešo baisaus!” (“Save us from the terrible enemy”), made the prayer acquire additional significance in the context of the occupied country.

Lyrics
Lithuanian
English
Marija, Marija, skaisčiausia lelija,
Tu švieti aukštai ant Dangaus!
Palengvink vergiją, pagelbėk žmoniją,
Išgelbėk nuo priešo baisaus!
Palengvink vergiją, pagelbėk žmoniją,
Išgelbėk nuo priešo baisaus!

Marija, Marija, skaisčiausia lelija,
Dangaus karaliene šviesi!
Užstok prieš Aukščiausią Tu žmogų menkiausią!
Nes viska pas Dievą gali!
Užstok prieš Aukščiausią Tu žmogų menkiausią!
Nes viska pas Dievą gali!
Mary, Mary, the purest lily
You shine high on Heaven
Ease slavery, help humanity
Save from the terrible enemy
Ease slavery, help humanity
Save from the terrible enemy

Mary, Mary, the purest lily
The bright Queen of Heaven
Right the little man in the eyes of the Highest
Because you can do everything at God’s
Right the little man in the eyes of the Highest
Because you can do everything at God’s
About the song Original title: "Lietuva brangi"
Artist/Author: Trad.
Date: 1920

Written as a poem by the national poet Maroinis and set to music by composer Juozas Naujalis, “Lietuva brangi” is often considered a second national anthem of Lithuania, and it is arguably the patriotic song by definition for this country. Nearly no major event or gathering during the Singing Revolution was complete without a rendition of the song by the crowd.

Lyrics
Lithuanian
English
Graži tu, mano brangi tėvyne,
Šalis, kur miega kapuos didvyriai:
Graži tu savo dangaus mėlyne!
Brangi: tiek vargo, kančių prityrei.
Graži tu savo dangaus mėlyne!
Brangi: tiek vargo, kančių prityrei.

Kaip puikūs slėniai sraunios Dubysos,
Miškais lyg rūta kalnai žaliuoja;
O po tuos kalnus sesutės visos
Griaudžiai malonias dainas dainuoja.
O po tuos kalnus sesutės visos
Griaudžiai malonias dainas dainuoja.

Ten susimąstęs tamsus Nevėžis,
Kaip juosta juosia žaliąsias pievas;
Banguoja, vagą giliai išrėžęs;
Jo gilią mintį težino Dievas.
Banguoja, vagą giliai išrėžęs;
Jo gilią mintį težino Dievas.

Graži tu, mano brangi tėvyne,
Šalis, kur miega kapuos didvyriai!
Ne veltui bočiai tave taip gynė,
Ne veltui dainiai plačiai išgyrė!
Ne veltui bočiai tave taip gynė,
Ne veltui dainiai plačiai išgyrė!
You are beautiful, my precious homeland
The country where heroes rest in graves
You’re beautiful because of your blue skies
Precious, because you went through so much misery and suffering
Beautiful, because of your blue skies
Precious, because you went through so much misery and suffering

Like the magnificent valleys of the fast flowing Dubysa
The forests, green like rue flowers
And in those mountains all sisters
Sing bitterly pleasant songs
And in those mountains all sisters
Sing bitterly pleasant songs

There is the thoughtful dark Nevėžis
Like a ribbon it belts those green meadows
Waves, its bed deeply ploughed
Its deep thought only known to God
Waves, its bed deeply ploughed
Its deep thought only known to God

You are beautiful, my precious homeland
The country where heroes rest in graves
It was to purpose that the forefathers defended you so
It was to purpose that the singers praised you widely
It was to purpose that the forefathers defended you so
It was to purpose that the singers praised you widely
About the song Original title: "Stebis tėtis ir mama"
Artist/Author: Gintarėliai
Date: 1972

While not exactly a very popular band during the years of the Singing Revolution, Gintarėliai deserve a special mention for the way they anticipated its musical spirit and some of its most important values. Secretly tuned on Radio Luxembourg, these young men fell in love with the great British rock bands of the time and got inspired to form their own group. Aware of the low quality of Soviet electric guitars, but also unable to afford foreign ones from the black market, they built their own instruments and began playing in small events and receptions, eventually climbing up to become recording artists. Not only a song like "Stebis tėtis ir mama" rocks like a hurricane, but it really impresses for its modernity. Soviet pop of the time was inevitably backwards, compared to what was going on in the Anglo-American scene, but this song sounds exactly like late 1960s-early 1970s, mixing influences from Jimi Hendrix, The Small Faces, the early Deep Purple and of course The Beatles. The lyrics of this song are written by the poet Algimantas Baltakis.

Lyrics
Lithuanian
English
Stebis motina ir tėtis,
Kas tam sūnui darosi,
Lagaminą ėmė dėtis
Ir gitaros stveriasi.

Į kurortą išvažiuoju
Jūs tik nesupykite
Atsisveikinkim gražiuoju
Tad sveiki palikite

Atlekiu stotin sukaitęs
Stoviu, dairinėjusi
Ieškau akimis mergaitės
Kur ji, ar atėjusi
Dad and mum wonder,
What is happening to the son
He began to pack the suitcase
And snatch the guitar

I'm going to the resort
You just don’t get angry
Let’s say goodbye peacefully
So stay healthy

I run down to the station feeling hot
I stand, looking around
Searching for a girl
Where is she, has she come?
About the song Original title: "Aš čia - gyva"
Artist/Author: Darius Polikaitis
Date: 1984

One of the highlights of the third edition of the Rock March, where it was executed by the Polikaitis Group, one of the American-Lithuanian bands, "Aš čia - gyva" is in reality a song written before the Singing Revolution. It expresses the typical feelings of the exiles who miss their country and feel they are still there in spirit. Verses of this kind clearly resonated also for those who lived in the occupied Lithuania.

Lyrics
Lithuanian
English
Ieškojau tėviškės tamsioj naktyj, it kapas:
— Kur tu, tėvyne, kur tu, Lietuva?
Ar plaka dar skausme širdis sukepus,
ar tu gyva, ar negyva?

Iškėliau, šaukdamas, rankas į dangų juodą:
— Kur tu, tėvyne, kur tu, Lietuva?
Ir kai parpuoliau, bėgdamas per gruodą,
atsakė man: — Aš čia — gyva.

Aš čia — gyva, — po kojų tarė žemė,
aš čia — gyva — sūnau, ar nematai?
Aš čia — gyva, — palinkę ir sutemę
atsiliepė dangaus skliautai.

Aš čia — gyva, — Dubysa subangavo,
aš čia — gyva, — jai pritarė krantuos,
aš čia — gyva, — kaip aidas sudejavo
daina pagojuose aukštuos.

Ėjau klupau iš pirkios į pirkelę:
— Kur tu, tėvyne, kur tu, Lietuva?
Tik balsas tas man rodė tamsų kelią:
Aš čia — gyva, aš čia — gyva.

Kaip skausmo ašaros, mirgėjo žiburėliai…
— Ar tu tenai, ar tu ten, Lietuva?
Ir iš tamsos, ir iš nakties, ir iš šešėlių
atsiliepė: — Aš čia — gyva.
I was looking for my homeland in a dark night, like a grave
Where are you, homeland, where are you, Lithuania?
Does the parched heart still beat in pain, are you alive or dead?

I raised my hands to the black sky, shouting
Where are you, homeland, where are you, Lithuania?
And when I fell down, while running on the frozen ground, she replied to me: "I'm here, alive"

I am here - alive - the earth said under my feet
I'm here - alive - son, don't you see?
I am here - alive - bent over and darkened
the arches of heaven responded

I'm here - alive - Dubysa waved
I'm here - alive – she was seconded on the shores
I'm here - alive - like an echo
The song in the high groves moaned

I went stumbling from hut to hut
Where are you, homeland, where are you, Lithuania?
Only that voice showed me the dark way
I'm here - alive, I'm here - alive

Like tears of pain, flashed lights
Are you there, are you there, Lithuania?
And out of darkness, and out of the night, and out of the shadows, she replied: - "I am here, alive"
About the song Original title: "Zombiai"
Artist/Author: Antis
Date: 1986

Released on Antis 1986 album Kažkas atsitiko (Something happened), “Zombiai” is a cover of Men at Work’s “Down Under” with a different set of lyrics that perfectly illustrate Antis’ inclination to sarcasm and sharp parody against Soviet Union and Soviet way of life. It is arguably the band’s biggest hit, and it became a regular feature in their concerts, before and after independence.

Lyrics
Lithuanian
English
Nelauktai iškilo grėsmė,
Gandai aplink - ateina zombiai.
Naktim nemiegu ir griebia nervas,
Grasina zombiai skaudžiai kąst.

Gyvenk kaip galima švariau,
Pikti kenkėjai budi tundroj.
Paklausyk, paklausyk ar girdi -
Zombiai atrieda, atidunda.

Kaip apsigint jau žinau -
Apsišluok ir apsiplauki.
Kitaip užpuls padarai -
Ropliai, graužikai ir zombiai.

Gyvenk kaip galima švariau,
Pikti kenkėjai budi tundroj.
Paklausyk, paklausyk ar girdi -
Zombiai atrieda, atidunda.

Balandžių daug Ukmergėj -
Jie nekalti, tačiau apsėsti.
Neglostyk jų visiškai -
Zombiais gali tu apsikrėsti.

Gyvenk kaip galima švariau,
Pikti kenkėjai budi tundroj.
Paklausyk, paklausyk ar girdi -
Zombiai atrieda atidunda.

Gyvenk kaip galima švariau,
Pikti kenkėjai budi tundroj.
Paklausyk, paklausyk ar girdi -
Zombiai atrieda atidunda.

Gyvenk kaip galima švariau,
Pikti kenkėjai budi tundroj.
Paklausyk, paklausyk ar girdi -
Zombiai atrieda atidunda.
Suddenly a menace appeared
Word spread out - zombies are coming
At night I can't sleep and I am getting nervous
Zombies threaten to bite painfully

Live as clean as possible
Angry vermin keep watch from tundra
Listen, listen do you hear?
Zombies are coming, rolling in

I already know how to defend myself
Sweep up and clean up
Otherwise creatures will attack
Reptiles, rodents, and zombies

Live as clean as possible
Angry vermin keep watch from tundra
Listen, listen do you hear?
Zombies are coming, rolling in

There are lots of pigeons in Ukmergė
They're innocent, but all possessed
Don't pet them at all
You can get infected by zombies

Live as clean as possible
Angry vermin keep watch from tundra
Listen, listen do you hear?
Zombies are coming, rolling in

Live as clean as possible
Angry vermin keep watch from tundra
Listen, listen do you hear?
Zombies are coming, rolling in

Live as clean as possible
Angry vermin keep watch from tundra
Listen, listen do you hear?
Zombies are coming, rolling in
About the song Original title: "Tėvyne dainų ir artojų"
Artist/Author: Rondo
Date: 1986

Set on a poem by Justinas Marcinkevičius, one of Lithuania’s foremost poets, “Tėvyne dainų ir artojų” is one of those songs that, in time, achieved the status of “unofficial pop anthem” of Lithuania. A dramatic, pathos-filled take on the questions of freedom and patriotism, it remains one of the most beloved Lithuanian songs, often trespassing the area of pop, having for instance received also arrangements for choir ensembles.

Lyrics
Lithuanian
English
Tėvyne dainų ir artojų,
Už ką tu mus šitaip baudi?
Į kokį džiaugsmingą rytojų
Per skausmą ir kraują vedi?

Iš kur šitas pyktis ir kerštas,
Tas melas vardan Lietuvos,
Kieno tas alsavimas karštas
Virš vaikiškos mano galvos?

Tėvyne, tu mano tėvyne,
Su kuo ir prieš ką tu eini?
Kodėl tu draskai man krūtinę
Ir ko tu taip ieškai many?

Negrįžę, nutolę, išėję,
Gyvi, negyvi – nepareis.
Retėja mūs girios, retėja
Ir gęsta namų žiburiai.

Į gyvą padangę pakilti
Leisk mūsų širdims ir akims.
Palaiminki duoną ir viltį,
Iš lūpų kalbos neatimk.

Tėvyne, tu mano tėvyne...
Homeland of songs and ploughmen
Why do you punish us like this?
To what kind of joyful tomorrow
Through pain and blood you lead?

Where does this anger and revenge come from?
Those lies for the sake of Lithuania
Whose is this hot breathing
Above my childish head?

Homeland, my homeland
With whom and against whom are you?
Why are you tearing up my chest
And what are you searching for in me?

Missing, wandered, gone
Alive, dead - not coming back
Our forests get thiner and thiner
And the lights of houses fade

To rise into a living sky
Let our hearts and eyes
Bless bread and hope
Do not take the language away from our lips

Homeland, my homeland...
About the song Original title: "Kalėdinė eglutė"
Artist/Author: Kardiofonas
Date: 1987

A big hit in those days, and the signature song for the band Kardiofonas, “Kalėdinė eglutė” became a sort of alternative Christmas song, in times when Christmas was still an unwelcome festivity for Soviet authorities. The rather surreal lyrics were written in 1981 by the poet Antanas Jonynas: by his own admission, Jonynas had initially written the verses as a play of words, but then he realized that the sense of absurd emerging from them was well reflective of the absurdity of the life conditions in Soviet Union. Eventually he came to define the poem as one of his most “socially-conscious” works. After independence, the track has remained a season favorite among Lithuanian audience.

Lyrics
Lithuanian
English
Ant kalėdinės eglutės
Supas raibosios gegutės.
Nežinia, ką jos kukuoja,
Nežinia, ką iškukuos,
Šakomis keliauja voras,
Nuo žvakučių vaškas laša,
Tyška vaškas ant stalelio
Su vokais neatplėštais.

Pakabinkit, pakabinkit
Ant kalėdinės eglutės
Stebuklingą vėrinėlį
Aršibaldo vaizdinių.
Kaip per ledą bėga pelės,
Kaip klastingai žybsi akys,
O už lango mėnuo dega,
Rūksta kraterių anga.

Į mane pro lango plyšį
Žvelgia dulkinas praeivis,
Ir per telefono kriauklę
Gaudžiant jūrą išgirstu.
Pasigirsta moters juokas,
Bet staiga garsai nutyla,
ir iš radijo antenos
Kals pamažu kulka.

Pakabinkit, pakabinkit
Neramios tylos girliandą,
Sprangią naikintuvų tylą
Užrakintą po žeme.
Pakabinkit, pakabinkit
Ant kalėdinės eglutės,
Sprangią naikintuvų tylą
Užrakintą po žeme.
Speckled cuckoos are swinging
On the Christmas tree
No idea what they’re cuckooing about
No idea what they’ll cuckoo out
Spider’s crawling on the branches
Wax is dropping from the candles
It is falling on a table
With unbroken letters

Hang it, hang it
On the Christmas tree
A magic necklace
Full of pictures of Archibald
And the mice run on ice
And the eyes blink tricky
While outside the window the moon is on fire
Smoke’s coming from the craters

A dusty passerby
Is watching me through a window crack
And I can hear the sea
In the shell of a telephone
I can hear a woman laughing
And then it all becomes silent
A bullet is getting ready to shoot
From a radio antenna

Hang it, hang it
Hang a chain of hectic silence
Hang the choky silence of fighter aircraft
That’s locked deep underground
Hang it, hang it
On the Christmas tree
The choky silence of fighter aircraft
That’s locked deep underground
About the song Original title: "Mona"
Artist/Author: Hilda Blues Band
Date: 1987

Protagonists of the first edition of the Rock March, the Hilda Blues Band were a rare case of Lithuanian act of the time that did not sound so typically “1980s”. Firmly rooted in blues and guitar rock, they sang both in Lithuanian and English, not rarely indulging in renditions of blues standards. Arguably, the most “American” among Lithuanian bands.

About the song Original title: "Kokia nuostabi, Lietuva, esi"
Artist/Author: Kipras Mašanauskas
Date: 1988

With its heavily patriotic feelings, its incitement to save Lithuania, and most of all its repeated metaphor of the “holding hands”, just like in the Baltic Way, “Kokia nuostabi, Lietuva, esi” is one of the most representative songs of the Singing Revolution. Numerous versions exist of this song, but the original was written and performed by Kipras Mašanauskas, who was still attending school at the time.

Lyrics
Lithuanian
English
Kokia nuostabi, Lietuva, esi
Kaipgi nemylėt mums tavęs?
Mūsų džiaugsmas Tu, mūsų skausmas Tu
Savo širdyse saugome tave

Mes didžiuojamės gimę Lietuvoj,
Bet vien to mažai – kad išsaugot ją,
Mūsų džiaugsmas ji, mūsų skausmas ji
Savo širdyse saugome ją.

Už rankų susiėmę apjuoskim Lietuvėlę
Žemelę šventą bočių išsaugotą mums,
Tiktai tauta išėję, vienybėje sustoję
Galėsim daug nuveikti vardan Lietuvos.

Lietuva, Lietuva – Tu mums šventa
Lietuva, Lietuva – mūs Motina
Lietuva, Lietuva – kol rankoj ranka
Lietuva, Lietuva – gyvuos Lietuva

Kokia nuostabi, Lietuva, esi
Tu tokia trapi, Bet dvasia didi.
Tad išsaugokim ateities kartoms
Ką mylėjo taip mūsų protėviai.

Už rankų susiėmę apjuoskim Lietuvėlę
Žemelę šventą bočių išsaugotą mums,
Tiktai tauta išėję, vienybėje sustoję
Galėsim daug nuveikti vardan Lietuvos.

Lietuva, Lietuva – Tu mums šventa
Lietuva, Lietuva – mūs Motina
Lietuva, Lietuva – kol rankoj ranka
Lietuva, Lietuva – gyvuos Lietuva
How wonderful, Lithuania, you are
How it is possible not to love you?
Our joy is you, our pain is you
We keep you in our hearts

We are proud to be born in Lithuania
But that's not enough - to save her
Our joy is she, our pain is she
We keep her in our hearts

Let's surround Lithuania by holding hands
The holy land which was preserved for us by ancestors
Only all nation coming out, standing in unity
Together, we will be able to do a lot for Lithuania

Lithuania, Lithuania - You are sacred to us
Lithuania, Lithuania - our Mother
Lithuania, Lithuania - while holding hands
Lithuania, Lithuania - Lithuania will live

How wonderful, Lithuania, you are
You are so fragile, But the spirit is great
So let’s save for future generations
What our ancestors loved so much

Let's surround Lithuania by holding hands
The land which was preserved for us by holy ancestors
Only all nation coming out, Standing in unity
Together, we will be able to do a lot for Lithuania

Lithuania, Lithuania - You are sacred to us
Lithuania, Lithuania - our Mother
Lithuania, Lithuania - while holding hands
Lithuania, Lithuania - Lithuania will live
About the song Original title: "Mes jėga"
Artist/Author: Katedra
Date: 1988

With their distinctive heavy metal sound, Katedra were among the protagonists of the first edition of the Rock March. Any song in any rock genre was in principle rebellious during those days, since they represented the western way to music that Soviet authorities despised. However, in “Mes jėga” we also witness the independentist spirit of the Singing Revolution – of course through the epic tones of heavy metal: “we are a force, when our hearts beat together”.

Lyrics
Lithuanian
English
Migla man drasko akis,
Migla, išaugus iš nieko,
Trukdo man žengti pirmyn.

Tai ne migla, tai pilki
Ir purvini pelenai,
Sėja juos tie, kurie bijo
Užleisti mums savo vietą.

Mes jėga
Kai mūsų širdys plaka išvien
Mes jėga
Mus vienybė veda tolyn

Konservatyvūs kvailiai
Apraizgė mus vielomis,
Nieks mums nesutrukdys
Kai mes eisim išvien, mes visi.

Kas ne kartu, tas prieš mus
Ir mes nušluosim visus, kas prieš.
Nieks mums nesutrukdys,
Jei mes eisim išvien, mes visi.

Mes jėga
Kai mūsų širdys plaka išvien
Mes jėga
Mus vienybė veda tolyn

Ateik ir stok šalia,
Kartu mes stipresni,
Mes ištaškysim tą dvokiantį liūną
Ir eisim pirmyn,
Peržengsim suknistą užtvarų laužą
Ir eisim tolyn.

Mes jėga
Kai mūsų širdys plaka išvien
Mes jėga
Mus vienybė veda tolyn
The fog tears my eyes
The fog, growing out of nothing
It prevents me from moving forward

It’s not fog, it’s gray
And dirty ashes
Sowed by those who are afraid
To give us their place

We are a force
When our hearts beat together
We are a force
Unity leads us further

Conservative fools
Bounded us with wires
Nothing will bother us
When we go together, we all will

Who is not with us is against us
And we will wipe out all who are against
Nothing will stop us
If we go together, we all will

We are a force
When our hearts beat together
We are a force
Unity leads us further

Come and stand by
Together we are stronger
We’ll splash that stinking swamp
And we’ll move on
We’ll cross the damned scrap of barriers
And we’ll move on

We are a force
When our hearts beat together
We are a force
Unity leads us further
About the song Original title: "Laisvė"
Artist/Author: Eurika Masytė
Date: 1988

Setting to music another poem by Justinas Marcinkevičius, singer Eurika Masytė created one of the unofficial anthems of the Independence movement, after she performed the song in 1989 with her band Antikvaras ("Antiques"). The tones of the song catch that hopeful-yet-melancholic feel that many ballads of the Singing Revolution possess.

Lyrics
Lithuanian
English
Aš jau nepakeliu minčių apie tave
Kaip obelis, apsunkusi nuo vaisių,
Užlaužiu tragiškai nusvirusias rankas,
O tu sakai: „Stovėk kaip stovi laisvė”.
O tu sakai: „Stovėk kaip stovi laisvė”.

Tai uždaryk mane, Tėvyne, savyje,
Kaip giesmę gerklėje mirtis uždaro,
Taip kaip uždaro vakarą naktis,
O tu man atsakai: „Aš tavo laisvė“.

O tu man atsakai: „Aš tavo laisvė“.
I cannot stand the thoughts about you anymore
Like an apple tree, full of fruits
I twist my arms that have drooped tragically
But you say: Stand like the freedom stands
But you say: Stand like the freedom stands

So close me, Homeland, inside yourself
Just like the death closes the song in the throat
Just like the night closes the evening
But you reply to me: I am your freedom

Oh the never-ending journey into you
Just like the stone, slumped on the side of the road
I am covering myself with the grey evening as if with moss
But you say: Walk like the freedom walks
But you say: Walk like the freedom walks

So close me, Homeland, inside yourself
Just like the death closes the song in the throat
Just like the night closes the evening
But you reply to me: I am your freedom

Artist/Author: Už Tėvynę
Date: 1988

If Katedra were the spokespersons for heavy metal in the first Rock March, Už Tėvynę acted as spokespersons for punk in the second edition. Once more, the genre alone would be enough to qualify as rebellious, but a song like "Lietuva tai - jėga" made sure that also the patriotic message would go through.

Lyrics
Lithuanian
English
Lietuva - tai jėga!
Lietuva - tai jėga!
Lietuva - tai jėga!
Lietuva - tai jėga!

Poetės akys skaudžiai sumerktos
Sugniaužtos monetos tarp pirštų švelnių
Gimtoji šalis netilpo jos rankose
Tad vadui tautų - gintarų dovanų.

Lietuva - tai jėga!
Lietuva - tai jėga!
Lietuva - tai jėga!
Lietuva - tai jėga!

Žodis iš lūpų - gyva paslaptis.
Ūgliai netikės nuolankumo mitu.
Klaidina rūsiai abejingumu.
Nesužinosi minties ateities.

Lietuva - tai jėga!
Lietuva - tai jėga!
Lietuva - tai jėga!
Lietuva - tai jėga!
Lithuania is a force
Lithuania is a force
Lithuania is a force
Lithuania is a force

The poet's eyes are painfully soaked
The coins are squeezed between the gentle fingers
The native country did not fit in her hands
So for the leader of the nations – ambers as gifts

Lithuania is a force
Lithuania is a force
Lithuania is a force
Lithuania is a force

The word from the lips is a living secret
Shoots will not believe in the myth of humility
Cellars mislead with indifference
You will not know the future of thought

Lithuania is a force
Lithuania is a force
Lithuania is a force
Lithuania is a force

Lyrics

Ir vėl, ir vėl
Mes darom revoliucijas
Perstatom daiktus į kitą pusę
Mes keičiam vėliavas
Perrašom konstitucijas

O patys liekam
Liekam tie patys

Duok mums šansą
Duok mums dar truputį laiko
Ir mes galėsim viską, viską pradėt
Viską iš naujo!

Apduję akys
Pašertos svajonės
Tingiai skraidžioja po dangų
Lyg sotūs miesto karveliai

Mes – betono vaikai!
Tarp sienų gimę
Tarp sienų augę
Sienom ir tiki

Duok mums šansą
Duok mums dar truputį laiko
Ir mes galėsim viską, viską pradėt
Viską iš naujo!
And again and again
We make revolutions
We move things to the other side
We change flags
We rewrite constitutions

While we remain
Remain the same

Give us a chance
Give us some more time
And we will be able to start everything
All over again

Dizzy eyes
Fed dreams
Lazily flie in the sky
Like full city pigeons

We are children of concrete
Born between the walls
Grown between the walls
Believing in the walls

Give us a chance
Give us some more time
And we will be able to start everything
All over again
About the song Original title: "Viešpaties lelija"
Artist/Author: Gintarė Jautakaitė
Date: 1988

Released properly only in 2009, "Viešpaties lelija" is one of the most beloved ballads of the Singing Revolution. Author and performer Gintarė Jautakaitė had been a musical child prodigy, having won a radio song competition at age six with a song she herself wrote. After embarking in a promising singer’s career in Soviet Lithuania, she moved to US in 1982 and became an American citizen the year after. Yet, she kept on writing songs in Lithuanian and her best known repertoire dates exactly to the years of the Singing Revolution. "Viešpaties lelija" belongs to the rich group of patriotic songs written during this period.

Lyrics
Lithuanian
English
Kur Dievulis saugo dangų, lietų kur alyvose
Jo paukšteliai gieda, švyti žuvys ežerų dugne.
Pažiūrėjęs į leliją, vėjas tyliai pasakys:
Viešpaties lelija, Viešpaties lelija.

Lietuva – vėjuose lelija,
Lietuva – mariose lelija,
Lietuva mana, Lietuva.

Žalvarinių abrozdėlių veidą ramų pakelėj
Guodžia, kalbina mėnulio begaliniai spinduliai.
Kur Dievulis saugo, sėja amžinąjį sodą, ten –
Viešpaties lelija, Viešpaties lelija.

Lietuva – vėjuose lelija,
Lietuva – mariose lelija,
Lietuva mana, Lietuva
Where God protects the heaven, rain where
His birds sing in the lilac trees, the fish glow at the bottom of the lakes
Looking at the lily, the wind will say quietly
The Lily of the Lord, The Lily of the Lord

Lithuania - lily in the winds
Lithuania - lily in the seas
Lithuania mine, Lithuania

The calm face of the brass pictures by the road
Is comforted and spoken to by the endless rays of the moon
Where God protects, sows the eternal garden, there
The lily of the Lord, the lily of the Lord.

Lithuania - lily in the winds
Lithuania - lily in the seas
Lithuania mine, Lithuania
About the song Original title: "Aš gimsiu rytoj"
Artist/Author: Foje
Date: 1989

Performed during the third edition of the Rock March, the song reflects the growing sentiment of confidence, felt by Lithuanians in 1989, that freedom was on sight. While Foje may have not been sure that this would have been achieved by their generation, they had no doubt that they “will be born tomorrow”, that is, that the quest for independence was not to cease until victorious. The song is also known as “Aš noriu būti laisvas”, after the last verse.

Lyrics
Lithuanian
English
Aš gimsiu rytoj
Mes gimsim rytoj
Kai kelią nušvies skaisti pilnatis
Mes gimsim rytoj
Mes gimsim tada
Kai liesis daina
Kai jos nieks nedrįs uždraust ir užgniaužt
Kai baigsis naktis
Tai būsim ne mes
Tai būsiu ne aš
Mes mirštam kančioj bet gimsim rytoj
Dar nėra minties
Kurios nestabdys
Dar nėra rimties kurios netrikdys
Mes gimsim rytoj
Aš noriu būti laisvas
Mes gimsim tada
Kai gėlės žydės
Kai niekas nevers nekęst ir žudyt
Mes gimsim tada
Aš noriu būti laisvas
I will be born tomorrow
We will be born tomorrow
When the path is illuminated by a bright full moon
We will be born tomorrow
We will be born then
When the song flows
When nobody dares to ban and suppress it
When the night is over
It will not be us
It will not be me
We die in suffering but we will be born tomorrow
No thought yet
Which will not be stopped
There is no quiet yet that will not be disturbed
We will be born tomorrow
I want to be free
We will be born
When the flowers bloom
When no one will force to hate and kill
We will be born then
I want to be free
About the song Original title: "Lietuvos valstybė"
Artist/Author: Antis
Date: 1989

Written for the third edition of the Rock March (July 1989), the song sports an anthemic singalong refrain that hails to the recently-proclaimed Lithuanian sovereignty, and also some bitterly sarcastic strophes that mostly targeted the Western European countries, which, until then, had not shown great sensibility and support towards the independentist struggle of Lithuania and other Soviet states.

Lyrics

Ei, tu, vakarų europieti,
Tarybų Sąjunga tau taip įdomi
Ei, tu, išprusęs užsienieti,
Čia dar ne Rusija, Rusija toli

Ei, tu, kvapnusis europieti,
Париж – Москва draugystės traukiny
Sakai, žemėlapyje net nepažymėta
Nei Estija, nei Latvija, nei Lietuva

Ei, tu, šaunusis demokrate,
Ką apie mūsų gyvenimą žinai?
Ei, tu, naivus aristokrate,
Kaip vėl tave lengvai apgavo Rytai

Ei, tu, tolimas kaimyne,
Trys šimtai mylių ir pasaulio pabaiga
Ei, tu, artimas vaikine,
Sustok, pažvelk pro langą

Lietuvos valstybė – pabandyk ištari
Lietuvos valstybė – Baltijos aušra
Lietuvos valstybė – mirti ar gyventi
Lietuvos valstybė – pasaulio Lietuva

Ei, jūs, Europos vegetarai,
Gardus pyragas Pabaltijo tautų
Ei, jūs, aukšti parlamentarai,
Šalin žemėlapius suteptus krauju

Ei, jūs, apsukrūs diplomatai,
Stipri pažemintų tautų valia
Ei, jūs, Perkūno žodis sako
Nuo šiol tebūna

Lietuvos valstybė – pabandyk ištari
Lietuvos valstybė – Baltijos aušra
Lietuvos valstybė – mirti ar gyventi
Lietuvos valstybė – pasaulio Lietuva
Hey you, Western European
You find the Soviet Union so interesting
Hey you, educated foreigner
This isn’t Russia yet, Russia’s far away

Hey you, fragrant European
On the Paris – Moscow friendship train
You say the map doesn’t even show
Estonia, nor Latvia, nor Lithuania

Hey you, brave democrat
What do you know about our life?
Hey you, naïve aristocrat
How easily the East deceived you again

Hey you, distant neighbor
Three hundred miles to the end of the world
Hey you, local boy
Stop and look out of the window

The Lithuanian state—try to pronounce it
The Lithuanian state—dawn of the Baltics
The Lithuanian state—to die or live
The Lithuanian state—the world’s Lithuania

Hey you, vegetarians of Europe
Tasty is the pie of the Baltic people
Hey you, top parliamentarians
Put those blood-stained maps away

Hey you, dodgy diplomats
Strong is the power of the humiliated people
Hey you, the word of the God of Thunder says
From now on there shall be

The Lithuanian state—try to pronounce it
The Lithuanian state—dawn of the Baltics
The Lithuanian state—to die or live
The Lithuanian state—the world’s Lithuania
About the song Original title: "Bunda jau Baltija"
Artist/Author: Žilvinas Bubelis
Date: 1989

“Bunda jau Baltija” (The Baltics Are Waking Up) is quite a unique case of trilingual song written in Lithuanian, Latvian (with the title “Atmostas Baltija”) and Estonian (“Ärgake, Baltimaad”). Composed by Boris Reznik, and sung by three different singers (Bubelis was the Lithuanian one), it was specifically tailored for the Baltic Way, and of course meant to be sung by the participants to the event in the three countries. The song is often referred to as the “joint anthem of the Baltics”.

Lyrics
Lithuanian
English
Trīs māsas jūras malā stāv,
Tās nespēks un nogurums māc.
Tur bradāta zeme un dvēseles,
Trīs tautu gods un prāts.
Bet torņos jau likteņa zvani skan,
Un jūra bangoties sāk.
Trīs māsas no miega modušās,
Par sevi pastāvēt nāk.

Atmostas Baltija, atmostas Baltija,
Lietuva, Latvija, Igaunija!

(Lithuanian part)
Prie jūros miega sesės trys
Jas slegia pančiai, neviltis
Klajoja lyg elgeta pajūriu
Dvasia tautų garbės
Bet varpas likimo nuaidi vėl
Ir jūra šiaušia bangas
Trys sesės iš miego kyla jau
Apginti savo garbės.

Bunda jau Baltija, bunda jau Baltija,
Lietuva, Latvija, Estija!

(Estonian part)
Kolm õde mere palged ees,
neid uinutas lainete laul.
Kolm rahvast siin sajandeid heideldes
tõid ohvriks muistse au.
Kui tornides juba lööb kella hääl,
merd haarab vabaduspüüd.
Et saatust ja elu kaitseda,
kolm õde virguvad nüüd.

Ärgake Baltimaad, ärgake Baltimaad,
Leedumaa, Lätimaa, Eestimaa!
(Latvian stanza)
Three sisters stand by the sea coast of sea
They are pressed by weakness and tiredness
There waded land and spirits
Of honour and sense of three nations
But in the towers of destiny belling loud
And the sea starts to wave
Three sisters wake up from the sleep
Come to stand for theirselves

The Baltics is waking up, the Baltics is waking up
Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia

(Lithuanian part)
Three sisters sleep by the sea
They are oppressed by the bonds, desperation
Wandering like a beggar by the sea coast
The spirit of nations' honor
But the bell of the destiny reaches again
And the sea tousles its waves
Three sisters awake from the sleep
To defend the honor of theirs

The Baltics is waking up, the Baltics is waking up
Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia

(Estonian part)
Three sisters with faces of sea
they were made sleepy by the song of waves
Three nations fighting here for centuries
sacrificed ancient honor
When the bell rings in towers
the sea is taken by the will of freedom
To protect the fate and life
three sisters wake now

Wake up Baltic countries
Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia
About the song Original title: "Laužo šviesa"
Artist/Author: Foje
Date: 1989

One of the biggest hits for the band Foje, “Laužo šviesa” is a typical example of a song that is not a protest song, but whose sentiments Lithuanians could fully relate to. When asked what the song was about, Foje leader Andrius Mamontovas answered “about loneliness and about waiting”.

Lyrics
Lithuanian
English
Laužo šviesa naktyje
Guodžia gaivina mane.
Nerimas stingsta veide,
Kas ten toli tamsoje?

Laužas prieš mano akis
Dega karštai lyg širdis.
Laukiu prie laužo šviesos,
Gal kas atklys iš tamsos.

Dek, šviesk ir neužgesk,
Šildyk rankas,
Glostyk akis atmerktas,
Būk vienintelė viltis,
Nors ir mano paties
Uždegta naktyje.

Gal kas prie laužo sustos,
Gal pasiilgs šilumos.
Tam kas klajoja nakty,
Laužo šviesa bus viltis.

Žvaigždės pakilo aukštai,
Šaukia jas paukščių takai.
Laužas žvaigždes man atstos,
Šviesą ir šilumą duos.

Dek, šviesk ir neužgesk,
Šildyk rankas,
Glostyk akis atmerktas,
Būk vienintelė viltis,
Nors ir mano paties
Uždegta naktyje.

Laužas ilgai dar liepsnos,
Kas man jo šviesą atstos?
Net visagalė naktis
Laužo užpūst neišdrįs.
The light from the fire in the night
Is comforting, refreshing me
The worry is settling in the face
What is there far in the dark?

The fire in front of my eyes
Is burning as hot as the heart
I am waiting by the light from the fire
Maybe someone will wander here from the dark

Burn, give light and don't extinguish
Warm up the hands
Caress the open eyes
Be the only hope
Even if lit up
By myself in the night

Maybe someone will stop by the fire
Maybe they will miss the warmth
For the one, who wanders in the night
The light from the fire will be the hope

The stars have risen high
They are greeted by the Milky Ways
The fire will substitute me the stars
Will give me the light and the warmth

Burn, give light and don't extinguish
Warm up the hands
Caress the open eyes
Be the only hope
Even if lit up
By myself in the night

The fire will burn for long
What could substitute its light for me?
Even the all-powerful night
Will not dare to blow the fire out
About the song Original title: "Grįžtu namo"
Artist/Author: Arvydas Vilčinskas
Date: 1989

Perhaps better known as "Į Lietuvą", this song acquired a special significance in relation to the so-called “Day of Mourining and Hope” on June the 14th – the day commemorating the start of the mass deportations of Lithuanians in 1941. With an album just finalized two days before, on June 14th 1989, Vilčinskas had the opportunity to premiere this song and others of his on the Lithuanian National Radio. The sentiment of returning home to Lithuania after a long time (reinforced by the melancholic and “estrada” feel of the music) was instantly relatable for thousands of Lithuanians, who reacted enthusiastically to the song and to Vilčinskas’s band Medus, making them a very popular act of the time.

Lyrics
Lithuanian
English
Grįžtu namo, kol saulė dar nenusileido,
Kol dar matau šešėlį savo kelyje,
Nenusibrauksiu prakaito sūraus nuo veido,
Ir nebandysiu atsidust pakelėje.

Padėk man, Viešpatie, nesibijau pavojų,
Neieškau dvasiai poilsio, kūnui atgaivos,
Kelionė tolima, o aš labai vėluoju,
Greičiau į Lietuvą, aš pasiilgau Lietuvos.

Greičiau į tėviškę, į savo meilės kraštą,
Ten mano Kryžių kalnas, vyturio dangus,
Ten skamba žodis kaip giesmė, kaip šventas raštas
Į laisvą Lietuvą šiandieną aš grįžtu.
I am coming back home before the sun goes down
While I still see the shadow in my path
I won’t clean up the salty sweat from my face
And I won’t try to sigh along the way

Help me, Lord, I am not afraid of danger, I am not looking for rest for the spirit, refreshment for the body
The journey is long and I am very late
Faster to Lithuania, I miss Lithuania

Faster to homeland, to the land of my love
There is my Hill of Crosses, the sky of the lark
The word sounds like a chant, like a sacred scripture there
I am returning to free Lithuania today
About the song Original title: "Dar ne vakaras"
Artist/Author: Povilas Meškėla
Date: 1990

This song is featured at the end of the movie „Vaikai iš Amerikos viešbučio“ (“The Children of the Hotel America”), which was released in 1990. The film depicts Kaunas in 1972 (the year when Romas Kalanta put himself on fire and died in Kaunas, as an act of protest against the Soviet regime): a group of teenagers listen to Luxembourg radio and dream about rock’n’roll and a different life, eventually becoming targets of KGB.

Lyrics
Lithuanian
English
Dar ne vakaras, tai dar ne vakaras,
Tai tik skauda viduj, tik skauda.
Pasislėpusios verkia ašaros,
Pasislėpę žodžiai rauda.

Dar ne vakaras, tai dar ne vakaras,
Tai tik ilgas stebuklo laukimas.
Pasislėpusios verkia ašaros
Ir dėkoja už tokį likimą.

Ir prasikala žmogui paukščio sparnai,
Jis kyla pažiūrėti,
Kaip prie kryžiaus prikala tą,
Kuris ardė šventę ir tylą.

Dar ne vakaras, tai dar ne vakaras,
Yra kelias į tolį, į būtį.
Pasislėpusios verkia ašaros,
Žodžiai ima nurimt po truputį.
It's not evening yet, this is not evening yet
It just hurts inside, it just hurts
While hiding, the tears cry
While hiding, the words weep

It's not evening yet, this is not evening yet
Only awaiting long for a miracle to happen
While hiding, the tears cry
And are grateful for such a fate

And the wings of a bird erupt in a man
He is rising up to see
How do they nail to the cross the one
Who was destroying the feast and the silence

It's notevening yet, this is not evening yet
There is a way further ahead, towards the being
While hiding, the tears cry
The words begin to calm down little by little
About the song Original title: "Sakmė apie šūdvabalį"
Artist/Author: Algirdas Martinaitis
Date: 1990

The Singing Revolution was not only animated by pop and folk music. Art music made its part too, and in fact it may have anticipated the phenomenon already in the 1970s, via composers like Bronius Kutavičius, Algirdas Martinaitis or Feliksas Bajoras, An example pertaining to the Singing Revolution years is Martinaitis’ “Sakmė apie šūdvabalį”, with a text written by Kristijonas Donelaitis. Martinaitis belonged to a generation called “New Romantics”, which successfully attempted to re-forge a Lithuanian artistic identity, emancipated from the canons imposed by Soviet occupation.

Lyrics
Lithuanian
English
Ir visos giminės bei tėvų paprotį laiko;
About the song Original title: "Broli, neverk!"
Artist/Author: Various
Date: 1991

An example of “instant song”, this track was written and recorded literally few days after the tragic events of the January killings in 1991, offering some comfort to a country in deep mourning. Initially released on an unofficial tape compilation, “Broli, neverk!” quickly became a standard in Lithuanian pop, and was covered by numerous acts in the following years. In its original version, the song was written and recorded by a group of singers and musicians from the pop-rock scene of Šiauliai city, including Virgis Stakėnas, Saulė, Laimontas Dinius, Gytis Paškevičius and others.

Lyrics
Lithuanian
English
Ta žiema amžina,
Mano, broli, tik Tu neliūdėk.
Ji nežino iš kur, ji nežino į ką,
Reikia šitaip skubėt, reikia šitaip skubėt.

Mes visi tarsi upė, krantų suspsausti,
Kai aplinkui žiema.
Mano, broli, neverk, turi verkti kalti,
Loja šunys nakty, šūviai nakty!

Mano, broli, neverk, šitame baisiame šurmuly,
Kas gi geriau?
Ar užgimus numirt, ar numirus užgimt, atsakyk?!

Tarsi upė visi, mes krantų suspausti,
Kai aplinkui žiema, ne balta -- kruvina.
Mano, broli, neverk, turi verkti kalti,
Loja šunys nakty, šūviai nakty!

Ta žiema amžina,
Mano, broli, tik tu neliūdėk.
Teka upė laisva,
Mano, broli, neverk.

Mano, broli, neverk, šitame baisiame šurmuly,
Kas gi geriau?
Ar užgimus numirt, ar numirus užgimt, atsakyk?!

Mano, broli, neverk, šitame baisiame šurmuly,
Mano, broli, neverk, šitame baisiame šurmuly,
Upė teka laisva.

Mano, broli, neverk, šitame baisiame šurmuly,
Mano, broli, neverk, šitame baisiame šurmuly,
Upė teka laisva.
Broli, neverk!
That winter is eternal
My brother, just don’t be sad
She doesn't know where from, nor where to
There’s such a hurry, there’s such a hurry

We are all like a river, squeezed by the shores
When winter is around
My brother, don’t cry, the guilty must cry
Dogs are barking in the night, shots in the night

My brother, don’t cry, in this terrible uproar
What's better?
To be born and then die, or to die and be reborn?

All like a river, we are squeezed by the shores
When winter is around, not white – bloody
My brother, don’t cry, the guilty must cry
Dogs are barking in the night, shots in the night

That winter is eternal
My brother, just don't be sad
The river flows free
My, brother, don’t cry

My brother, don’t cry, in this terrible uproar
What's better?
To be born and then die, or to die and be reborn?

My brother, don’t cry, in this terrible uproar
My brother, don’t cry, in this terrible uproar
The river flows free

My brother, don’t cry, in this terrible uproar
My brother, don’t cry, in this terrible uproar
The river flows free
Brother, don’t cry
About the song Original title: "Šaukiu aš tautą"
Artist/Author: Vytautas Kernagis
Date: 1992

Kernagis was a singer-songwriter and actor, who was one of the founders and main exponents of the “sung poetry”, the Lithuanian equivalent of the Italian cantautorato or the French chansonniers. Written before its release in 1992 on the lyrics by the poet Bernardas Brazdžionis, “Šaukiu aš tautą” captures the feelings of the newly-independent Lithuania, looking at the future with hope but also bearing the long suffering of the past that just ended.

Lyrics
Lithuanian
English
Šaukiu aš tautą, GPU užguitą
Ir blaškomą it rudenio lapus
Į naują vieškelį, į nauja buitį
Kur niekad šiaurūs vėjai neužpūs
Šaukiu lietuvį burtis prie lietuvio
Ir gyvą širdį prie gyvos širdies
Kad tamsiame vidurnakty nežuvę
Pakiltų rytmečiui gyventi ir žydėt
Iš sutemų, iš prieblandų išeikit
Uždekit nauja ugnį širdyse
Vergams palikit vargo naktį klaikią! -
Šaukiu aš, jūsų protėvių dvasia
Šaukiu aš tautą, žemės pėdoj gyvą
Ir vyturėlio rytmečio maldoj
Ir žydinčią, kaip žydinčių alyvų
Panemunių sodybose žiedai
Šaukiu pavasario pilkų vagų artoją -
Tegu lig saulės kyla jo daina!
Tegu laukai, tegu miškai kartoja:
Gana tulžies, gana mirties, gana!
Šaukiu aš darbo rankų milijonus
Įsupt naujam darbymečiui varpus
Į naujo džiaugsmo klėtis, naujo darbo kluonus
Ne kalinio namus, ne liūnus, ne kapus
Šaukiu vardu aš jūsų vargo žemės
Balsu piliakalnių, ir pievų, ir miškų -
Nekeršykit, kad karštos kraujo dėmės
Nekristų prakeiksmu ant jūs vaikų vaikų
Šaukiu iš amžių: ateities nevertas
Kas dabarties nedrįso tautai nešt
Kas posūnių žaizdas širdy atvertas
Išdegino liepsna veidmainiškos ugnies
Šaukiu balsu tėvų dievų ramovės
Ir jūsų krikšto atgaila šviesia:
Stovėkit amžiais čia tvirti, kaip saulė stovi!
Šaukiu aš, jūsų protėvių dvasia
I call the nation, hunted by GPU* (*GPU – The Soviet secret police in the years 1922-1923)
And flung like autumn leaves
To a new road, to a new life
Where the northern winds will never blow
I call a Lithuanian to get together with a Lithuanian
And a living heart towards a living heart
For those who survived in the dark midnight
Would rise in the morning to live and bloom
Get out of the darkness, out of the twilight
Light a new fire in the hearts
Leave the horrific night of troubles to the slaves
I call in the spirit of your ancestors
I call the nation living in the footmark of the earth
And in the morning prayer of a little lark
And blooming like the blossoms of flowering lilacs
In the homesteads of Panemunė
I call the ploughman of gray furrows in spring
Let his song rise to the sun
Let the fields, let the forests repeat
Enough of gall, enough of death, enough
I call for millions of working hands
To swing up the bells for the new busy season
To the barns of new joy, the stackyards of new work
Not to prisoner's house, not to morass, not to graves
I call in the name of your land of misery
With the voice of mounds, and meadows, and forests
Don't take revenge, for hot blood stains
Would not curse the children of your children
I call from the past: he is not worth of the future
Who did not dare bringing the present to the nation
By whom the wounds opened in the hearts of stepchildren
Were burnt out with the flame of deceitful fire
I call with the voice of my parents’ and gods’sanctuary
And the bright repentance of your baptism
Stand strong for ages here, like the sun stands
I call in the spirit of your ancestors
