The museum was founded in Kaunas in 1926 on the initiative of Balys Sruoga and Vincas Krėvė. It was originally called the Theatre Seminar Museum of the University of Lithuania and was renamed the State Theatre Museum between 1936 and 1944. During the Second World War, the museum’s activities were interrupted, and many exhibits were lost. From 1957 to 1964, it operated as the Museum of the Lithuanian Theatre Society (Actors’ House), and between 1964 and 1992 it functioned as the Department of Theatre and Music within the Lithuanian Museum of Art. Since 1992, it has welcomed visitors as the Lithuanian Theatre, Music and Cinema Museum.
The Lithuanian Theatre, Music and Cinema Museum celebrates and preserves the heritage of theatre, music, and cinema. It collects and safeguards valuable artefacts, researches the history of these fields, and shares it with the public through exhibitions and other cultural activities.
The museum was founded by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania.
Each year, the museum organises around fifteen exhibitions across Lithuania, as well as a variety of events, concerts, film screenings, presentations, and more. Schoolchildren from all over Lithuania participate in the educational programmes run by the museum.
Our mission is to actively and compellingly share knowledge of significant cultural phenomena from the past and present, using both traditional and contemporary methods, guided by the principles of openness, cooperation, and social responsibility. We aim to be an open and creative space for exploring art, bridging past and present, and shaping a meaningful future.
Our vision is to be a modern and socially responsible institution, recognised both in Lithuania and internationally, creating a unique vision of the world and a vibrant cultural environment.
Our core values are responsibility, openness, competence, creativity, and respect.
